Going Green Starts In The Bathroom
“Going Green” is obviously a trendy thing to do these days but implementing simple environmentally friendly measures in your home can actually save you money as well as doing your bit for our planet.
The bathroom is the place to start, watching water disappear down a drain is literally like flushing your hard earned $’s down the drain with it!
With regard to the toilet itself, ensure you are using recycled paper and avoid using products made from virgin boreal forest trees. Install a low flow toilet, a dual-flush toilet or a dual-flush retrofit on your existing toilet. Instead of the old toilet flush that used a whopping five to seven gallons each flush the new dual flush uses less than a gallon for liquid waste and 1.6 gallons for solid.
Install a low-flow shower head, a typical shower head will use anywhere between 5 to 8 gallons of water per minute, while a low-flow head will bring that down to 2.5 gallons or less with the same amount of water pressure.
Turn off the water whilst you are brushing your teeth and if you are using a wet razor put the stopper in the sink and half fill it. Better still, install a motion sensor faucet. A motion sensor will be able to expertly track when you need H2O to flow. Moreover, using such a faucet will also help reduce the amount of gunk that builds up around your faucet handles which ultimately will prevent the spreading and recontamination of germs.
Use non-toxic bathroom cleaners and a PVC-free plastic shower curtain. Or maybe look into a shower curtain made from hemp which is naturally resistant to UV light as well as mold. The fibers of hemp are also able to absorb and at the same time, channel water at a better rate compared to cotton.
Purchase towels, bathmats and robes made from organic cotton and sustainable bamboo.
Replace your existing light bulbs with LED bulbs. On average LED bulbs consumes 80 percent less energy than its outdated predecessor, it also lasts 25 times longer. Because LEDs operate at a lower wattage, without sacrificing lumens or light quality, your monthly electricity bill will show a significant saving.
