Test Your Breakfast IQ
We all love breakfast, and if you don’t you should start, but don’t get me started on the reasons why you should begin your day with a great breakfast! This is all about testing your breakfast IQ.
Which of the following food choices would you make? Select which you think is the healthiest and then carry on reading to see if you chose the smarter way to start your day.
1. Bacon vs Sausage
2. Home Fries vs Hash Browns
3. High-Fiber Cereal vs Oatmeal
4. Egg Sandwich vs Breakfast Burrito
5. A Bowl of Greek Yoghurt and Berries vs A Smoothie of Greek Yoghurt and Berries
Ok, lets look at number 1, Bacon vs Sausage, and the winner is ………. Bacon!
A side of sausage adds an average of 277 calories to your meal whereas the bacon is a mere 131 calories with a third less sodium and half the saturated fat, in fact believe it or not, a slice of bacon is only 35 calories.
Home Fries vs Hash Browns – the winner is ………. Home Fries!
When choosing anything fried always choose the option that is least fried and in this instance home fries have a larger surface area to which the oil can take hold so will have less fat and approximately 15 percent fewer calories than hash browns.
High-Fiber Cereal vs Oatmeal – the winner is ……. High-Fiber Cereal!
The higher the fiber content the healthier it is for you, therefore a cereal such as All bran will often deliver twice as much fiber as oatmeal and fewer calories.
Egg Sandwich vs Breakfast Burrito – the winner is …….. Egg Sandwich!
This one is crazy! Would you believe a restaurant burrito can be as much as 1,000 calories? Now an egg sandwich, whilst still high, has 722 calories but a whopping 32 grams of protein which could ultimately encourage you to eat less at lunch that same day.
A Bowl of Greek Yoghurt and Berries vs A Smoothie of Greek Yoghurt and Berries – the winner is ……….. A Bowl of Greek Yoghurt and Berries
No it wasn’t really a trick question and whilst calorie wise and nutritionally they are exactly the same, studies have proven that drinking a fruit smoothie doesn’t fill you up the same way that eating whole fruit does. Liquid meals empty from the stomach more quickly than solid foods, which can leave you feeling hungry sooner. You can also drink a smoothie more rapidly than the time it takes to eat your bowl of yoghurt and berries. Certainly quicker than the 20 minutes it takes your brain to register satiety and signal it’s time to stop eating.
So how did you do?
